The Syrjävaara Dark Sky Center started continuous darkness measuring. Unihedron’s SQM-LU measuring device, which is in operation at night all year round, is installed alonside the sky camera. The goal is to get comprehensive information about the variation of the darkness in the area in different seasons and under different conditions. The darkness meter readings and sky camera images are on Syrjävaara’s website, where you can follow them.
Syrjävaara has also two mobile remote-controlled darkness measuring stations at its disposal. This winter they have been used by the HAMA project of Juuka, Kaavi and Tuusniemi counties, “Utilizing the dark sky as part of the development of responsible tourism”. The project’s measurings will continue in the fall, but so far they have already provided a lot of interesting information about the darkness of the sky in the area.
